The social dilemma in AI development and why we have to solve it
Strümke, Inga, Slavkovik, Marija, Madai, Vince I.
While the demand for ethical artificial intelligence (AI) systems increases, the number of unethical uses of AI accelerates, even though there is no shortage of ethical guidelines. We argue that a main underlying cause for this is that AI developers face a social dilemma in AI development ethics, preventing the widespread adaptation of ethical best practices. We define the social dilemma for AI development and describe why the current crisis in AI development ethics cannot be solved without relieving AI developers of their social dilemma. We argue that AI development must be professionalised to overcome the social dilemma, and discuss how medicine can be used as a template in this process.

To Participants in the Plenary Assembly of the Pontifical Academy for Life (28 February 2020)
I offer you a cordial greeting on the occasion of the General Assembly of the Pontifical Academy for Life. I thank Archbishop Paglia for his kind words. I am grateful too for the presence of the President of the European Parliament, the FAO Director-General and the other authorities and leaders in field of information technology. I also greet those who join us from the Conciliazione Auditorium. And I am heartened by the numerous presence of young people: I see this as a sign of hope.
Vatican joins IBM, Microsoft to call for facial recognition regulation - Reuters
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican joined forces with tech giants Microsoft and IBM on Friday to promote the ethical development of artificial intelligence (AI) and call for regulation of intrusive technologies such as facial recognition. The three said AI should respect privacy, work reliably and without bias, consider human rights and operate transparently. Pope Francis, who has raised concerns about the uncontrolled spread of AI technologies, gave his backing in a speech read on his behalf at a conference attended by Microsoft president Brad Smith (MSFT.O) and IBM (IBM.N) Executive Vice President John Kelly. The pope is ill and could not deliver the address himself. Calling for the ethical development of algorithms, known as "algor-ethics", Francis warned about the dangers of AI being used to extract data for commercial or political ends, often without the knowledge of individuals.

Should We Trust Artificial Intelligence Regulation by Congress If Facebook Supports It?
Last week, several members of Congress began pushing the resolution with the aim of "supporting the development of guidelines for ethical development of artificial intelligence." It was introduced by Reps. Brenda Lawrence and Ro Khanna -- the latter of whom, crucially, represents Silicon Valley, which is to the ethical development of software what West Virginia is to the rollout of clean energy. This has helped make Khanna a national figure, in part because, far from being a tech industry cheerleader, he's publicly supported cracking down on the data Wild West his home district helped create. For example, he has criticized the wrist-slaps Google and Facebook receive in the wakes of their regular privacy scandals and called for congressional action against Amazon's labor practices.

China, Sexism And Artificial Intelligence - Disruption Hub
In April, the Chinese AI business SenseTime became the world's most valuable Artificial Intelligence startup, with a valuation of more than $3bn. The company, founded in 2014, is backed by many of the big names in Chinese tech – including Alibaba, who reportedly sought the biggest stake in the business with a $230m investment. Whilst this growth is music to the ears of SenseTime investors, it is also part of a wider drive by in China to become world leaders in AI. With both private business and the government firmly behind this ambition, China is the perfect breeding ground for pushing the boundaries of AI technology. Enduring cultural attitudes towards women, however, give this technological success story a sting in its tail.
Artificial Intelligence Ethics Crucial says House of Lords
A report from the House of Lords recommends that ethics be a key focus in the future of artificial intelligence, saying it should be developed "for the common good and benefit of humanity" and never given "autonomous power to hurt, destroy or deceive" people. AI in the UK: Ready, Willing and Able highlights the UK's opportunity to become a world-leading nation in the development of artificial intelligence but insists that clear-cut ethics must be established around the development and deployment of such technology. The report claims that, as a world leader, the UK can "help shape the ethical development of artificial intelligence" on a global scale; thus helping to set the fundamental guidelines for all future AI development. The report also addresses other key issues surrounding the development of AI – the potential effect on workers and data privacy rights. For some time now the issue of job losses due to the introduction of AI and robotics has been discussed, with conflicting claims of job losses and exaggeration of figures.

AI Ethics - Abhishek Gupta
At District 3, my research is focused on assessing the labor impacts of AI-enabled automation in the financial services industry in Quebec, Canada. At McGill University, I'm building out an introductory curriculum via a 4-part workshop series to introduce the topic of the ethical development of AI to students, faculty, staff and alumni of the McGill community. I'm also actively researching the impacts of AI-enabled technologies pervading the field of medicine, especially on how this affects doctors in training and impacts on different fields where AI systems are doing well on narrowly defined domains. I founded the meetup group on AI Ethics in Montreal that meets once every two weeks to do a deep dive on different aspects of the ethical development of AI. We also work together as a community to provide feedback and recommendations to public documents like the Montreal Ethical AI Declaration.
Artificial Intelligence Seizes the Attention of UK Government
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a nebulous concept that lies over the horizon. The fourth industrial revolution, powered by AI, is already here and these advanced systems are helping us scale human knowledge and expertise. AI represents a significant economic opportunity for the United Kingdom. In fact, recent research from IBM and the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) found that around 20% of British firms have already deployed practical applications of AI. To gain a greater understanding of the potential impact of AI and what the future could hold, the UK House of Lords recently issued a call for views from interested parties.
Embedding Values into Autonomous Intelligent Systems
Are you ready for this secret about the implementing values into AI systems? New breakthroughs allow scientists discovering methods that help intelligent systems gain an understanding of human values. When there is no values-based framework for artificial intelligence, then the biases will identify the code of human ethics. The risk of unclear global ethical standards is that expectation can prevent innovation for artificial intelligence. AI systems may solve world's problems, and manage the global economy.
